Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars



Like all of our wines, estate-grown grapes are the heart and soul of this Napa Valley Merlot, which is joined by high-quality fruit purchased from independent growers who farm their vines to our specifications. We take the same approach with our Napa Valley wine collection as we do our single-vineyard and estates wines, using great care in harvesting and handling the grapes, and a measured hand in the cellar, to produce wines of supple power, elegance and age-worthiness.

Vineyards & Winemaking

Estate-grown grapes and those from ARCADIA VINEYARD form the core of this Merlot, and comprise 61% of the blend. The remainder comes from a handful of other cool-climate sites, from the Oak Knoll District south to Carneros, including Andy Beckstoffer’s Carneros Lake and Las Amigas vineyards. Cooler sites yield grapes that create clean, balanced, food-friendly Merlot with fresh acidity and minerality. After fermentation, this wine was aged for 15 months in medium-toast French oak barrels (31% new). A small amount (5%) of Cabernet Sauvignon was blended in to add richness.

Tasting Notes

Intense and complex fruit aromas of cherry, red plum, and pomegranate, with notes of cigar box, cardamom, and toasted oak lead to an equally complex palate and refreshingly brisk finish. The flavors mirror the aromas, with additional notes of chocolate, vanilla and dark spice. The tannins are supple yet have good grip, suggesting that this Merlot be served with hearty, meaty dishes such as rack of lamb, cherry-sauced duck, or a mushroom and herb ragout over polenta.
