VINTAGE NOTES
An
early spring followed an unusually heavy rainfall in November and
December. Mild weather brought the vines out of dormancy weeks ahead
of schedule. Extremely warm summer days hastened ripening, and harvesting
began the first week of September. The wines are richly voluptuous
in fruit.
WINEMAKING NOTES
"Referring
to our 1984's as ‘superb’, Robert Parker has described
the vintage as ‘exciting’ for Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon
with wines that are stylistically rich, ripe, voluptuous, and tannic.
We are pleased with all our Stag's Leap Wine Cellars' releases from
this year, but are especially fond of our own vineyards' 1984 S.L.V.
Cabernet Sauvignon. The color of blackberries, this Cabernet is
nicely introduced by spicy-currant like aromas. Rich but refined
fruit is accentuated by our successful new aging regime (using younger
average age French oak barrels with slightly increased toast levels).
Cassis-like flavors, highlighted by appropriate acidity, progress
to a lengthy and pleasing finish. The steady warm ripening season
of 1984 provided us with an outstanding example of our estate bottled
SLV Cabernet Sauvignon. You will find the rich fruit and sturdy
backbone excitingly comparable to the 1978 vintage."
