Lady Liberty in Auction Top Ten
The campaign to reopen the Statue of Liberty received a boost on June 7, when eager bidding pushed the Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars offering into the top ten lots at the 2004 Napa Valley Wine Auction.
Barbara and Warren Winiarski had pledged to match the winning bid with an equal donation, in the bidder’s name, to The Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island Foundation’s Campaign to Reopen the Statue of Liberty, which had been closed to visitors since September 11, 2001. The $7 million campaign covered the cost of enhanced security, allowing the statue to reopen on August 3.
